PHASE 3 STUDIOS INNOVATES AN INTERACTIVE MOVIE PREMIERE FOR STX ENTERTAINMENTS’ “THE BOY”.
How we LIVE STREAMED a movie premiere and rocked social media!
STX Entertainment approached Phase 3 Studios about doing an interactive movie premiere for a suspense/thriller film they were distributing called “The Boy”. With social media influencers broadcasting live from 15 cities, the goal was to create an interactive experience to introduce viewers to this film. It was more than just webcasting – individual crews in each location were required, all transmitting to the premiere location. As a nation-wide live production, the right equipment was essential, and there could be no mistakes.
Traditionally, this kind of task would be done with a series of satellite uplinks. But with fifteen locations, satellite uplinks would be cost-prohibitive. Phase 3 utilized bi-directional encoders that would handle HD at very low latency.
Once production coordinating had begun, we discovered that most of the movie theatres we were working with did not have high speed networks that we could tap into. In some cases, to solve this problem, we were required to use cell based data. Our encoder’s transmission quality over cellular networks, even with mediocre connectivity, was very high and sufficient to sustain the broadcast.
Ultimately, Phase 3 Studios created a unique set-up. At the main control room in Los Angeles, six cameras fed into a switcher. Fourteen encoder rack units were also connected to the switcher. The program was fed from the L.A. Premier to the fourteen other locations, and was projected on their screens. The entire show lasted 30 minutes with interaction with each of the 14 markets before circling back to L.A. for the conclusion.

The studio was delighted with the result. Since nothing like this had been attempted before, other studios took interest, and stopped by to observe. The premiere was a huge success with more than 90 million social media interactions in just the first 3 days, following. The Boy went on to become one of the studio’s more successful releases of last year. Phase 3’s unique, out of the box approach enabled the successful production of this event, under budget, which previously would not have been possible with more traditional means of technology.
